Questions and Answers

  1. What is Pingdom GIGRIB?

Pingdom GIGRIB is a unique website monitoring system that uses a distributed network of clients to collect uptime data from multiple locations and displays this information publicly on the Pingdom GIGRIB website.

  2. What does “uptime” mean?

Uptime is the time a website is available on the Internet. If uptime is 100% it means a website is accessible all the time. With Pingdom GIGRIB you can see if your website really is available 24/7.

  3. How do I use Pingdom GIGRIB?

To use Pingdom GIGRIB you need to download the GIGRIB client and install it on your computer. Your computer then becomes a “test node” which, along with many other test nodes in the GIGRIB network, collects uptime data for websites (your own and those of others) and sends it to a central location here at Pingdom.

  4. Ok, the Pingdom GIGRIB client is running on my computer. What do I get in return?

Your computer will test the availability (uptime) of your sites and those of many others. In return, GIGRIB clients installed on other users’ computes will also test your websites. The advantage of this is that your website(s) will be checked from many different locations on the Internet. You will be able to see all the collected uptime data on the GIGRIB website, so if you for example want to see how your website performed two months ago, you can easily do that.

  5. What does “5 hours of monitoring for 1 hour of GIGRIB work” mean?

This means that each hour that your Pingdom GIGRIB client works on your computer (connected to the Internet) gives you an additional 5 hours of uptime checks through the GIGRIB monitoring network. If your GIGRIB client works for 5 days straight, then you can basically go on a (disconnected) vacation for 25 days and still have your websites monitored. The limit to this rule is that you can not earn more than 30 days of monitoring (when your GIGRIB client is offline).

  6. If my client works for 30 minutes, will it count as one hour of work?

Yes and no. To earn 5 hours of monitoring, your client needs to be active for 1 hour. The activity of the client may vary during that time. In some cases 30 minutes can be enough to produce enough activity to cover a full hour.

  7. How much bandwidth does Pingdom GIGRIB use?

The use of bandwidth may vary, but users with any kind of broadband Internet connection (cable, WiFi, T1, ADSL, etc.) should not notice any difference in their Internet connectivity. The client uses very little bandwidth.

  8. What does the word “GIGRIB” mean?

GIGRIB stands for Green Is Good, Red Is Bad.

  9. How do I install the Pingdom GIGRIB client?

Follow the instructions on the “How to get started” page.

  10. How do I view the uptime of my website?

On the My GIGRIB sites page, click on the website you want to view uptime for.

  11. Why is Pingdom GIGRIB free?

Pingdom GIGRIB benefits from having as many users as possible, so we are offering this service for free. And it will stay free. To know more about the point of GIGRIB, read the About page.

  12. Why is the user agent of the Pingdom GIGRIB client called “Pingdom GIGRIB bot”?

This is to help webmasters filter out the visits from Pingdom GIGRIB clients from their regular website traffic statistics.

  13. How are the checks made? How is a site determined as down?

A detailed description of how Pingdom GIGRIB determines downtime can be found on the “How it works” page.
